Now That We’ve Won the Primary…What’s Next?

(Dennis Hof) – The message in our GOP primary race for Assembly District 36 was simple and clear: Oust a tax-hiking incumbent Republican who broke his word and stabbed We the Taxpayers in the back by voting for the largest tax hike in Nevada history.

Now we’re just weeks away from a potentially historic victory that has shocked and totally discombobulated the Carson City establishment.  It would be the Understatement of the Year to say I’m not the choice of the string-pullers and professional lobbyists.

Which is fine with me.  As fellow entrepreneur and conservative talk-show host Herman Cain says, “I does not care.”  I’m the PEOPLE’s choice…and that’s all that really matters.

So if I’m fortunate enough to earn your trust to represent you next year in Carson City, what will I be focusing on?  Fair question.

Generally speaking, I plan to focus on stopping efforts to turn our state into “East California.”  Real Nevadans – especially rural Nevadans – don’t want a cradle-to-grave, nanny-state government or the higher taxes to pay for it.

They don’t want to become a “sanctuary” state – which was proposed in the last legislative session and will be brought back up again next year.  They don’t want to abolish ICE.  They don’t want their gun rights taken away.  They don’t want a government-run (how’s that working out for our public schools?) “Medicare for All” health care system.

And they sure as heck don’t want the government telling us we can’t use plastic straws!

Unfortunately, a lot of bad, liberal ideas have crept over our border with refugees from our neighbor from the Left.  We need to reverse that.  We need to adopt that popular phrase, “I don’t care how you did it in California; this is Nevada.”

It’s time to make Nevada NEVADA again.

More specifically, our general election campaign focus is on three issues:  Jobs.  Education.  Security.

JOBS:  The economy overall is doing well.  But it’s not doing as well in rural Nevada as elsewhere.  We not only need more jobs for our district, but better ones.  And that starts with reducing government regulations and taxes that get in the way and make it harder for entrepreneurs to start or expand a business.  Every person in District 36 who wants a job should be able to get a job.

And for those who can work but choose not to, it’s time to end the gravy train and put the hammock away.  No more sitting in mom and dad’s basement playing video games while collecting taxpayer-funded government benefits.  No more free rides.

EDUCATION:  Every kid in District 36 deserves a great education.  That’s the ticket to prosperity and success.  But despite all the additional money we put into the public school system in 2015 with the largest tax hike in Nevada history, our public schools are still dead last in the country.

More money obviously isn’t the answer.  What is is parental school choice.  And not just choice between one government school or another.  The public school monopoly will never improve until it’s forced to compete with the private sector.  That’s why I support fully funding Nevada’s landmark Education Savings Accounts (ESAs).

And I’m telling you this right now:  I will NOT vote for any budget that does not include ESA funding.  Period.

Kids’ futures are at stake.  And high-quality private schools should not be restricted only to the wealthy.  Public education funds should follow the child as directed by the child’s parents or guardians – just as parents get to choose their child’s doctor.

SECURITY:  Every citizen in District 36 should feel safe and secure in their homes, their business and on our streets.  And that security starts with defending our Second Amendment right to self-defense.

As the saying goes, when seconds count…police are only minutes away.  This isn’t a knock on cops.  With the exception of the occasional “bad apple” who abuses his or her authority, they are true heroes; putting their lives on the line, literally, for us day in and day out.

But they simply can’t be everywhere all the time.  So unless you can afford to hire a 24/7 armed bodyguard like Hollywood celebrities, you need to be able to defend yourself, your family and your home IMMEDIATELY when danger rears its ugly head.

We’ll be talking about this a lot more in a lot more detail in the closing weeks of this campaign.  But as always, if you have a specific question or concern, please email me at [email protected] or call me on my personal cell phone: (775) 720-9090.
